The Ruhr region with its approx. 5 million inhabitants is the most exciting region in North Rhine-Westphalia. And Bochum, the city where you will study, is right in the middle of it.
In Bochum you will meet many students from all over the world, there is a great nightlife, culture and of course football (the club VFL Bochum plays in the German Bundesliga).
Directly in the neighbourhood of Bochum are the cities of Dortmund, Essen, Gelsenkirchen, and Duisburg. With Dortmund and Gelesenkirchen you have right in the neighbourhood two famous Bundesliga clubs (BVB Dortmund 09 and FC Schalke 04).
But it's not just football that characterises our region: you'll find lots of live clubs for small and large rock and pop concerts, urban nightlife and dance locations, theatres, concert halls for classical music, museums, interesting subculture venues, ... It is not an understatement to compare the Ruhr region with Berlin in terms of its diversity and attractiveness. There are several big live festivals over the year in the Ruhr Area, like: Bochum Total, Juicy Beats Festival (Dortmund), Ruhr Reggae Summer (Mühlheim), blaues rauschen (different spots in the Ruhr region), Traumzeit Festival (Duisburg), Way Back When Festival (Dortmund), BASE.Festival (Oberhausen), Extraschicht (different spots in the Ruhr region), ...
What also makes Bochum an interesting location for you: by train you can be in Cologne, Düsseldorf, Bonn, Aachen, Münster in 1-2 hours, and in 3-4 hours you can be in Frankfurt, Hamburg, Brussels or Amsterdam.
