Enrolment

Tuition Fee/Social Contribution
After the completion of your enrolment you have to pay the social contribution (approx.: € 340,00) to the university. For foreign students it is advisable to open a German bank account and pay after your arrival in Bochum. Otherwise you might have to pay high remittance fees. It can be paid via online banking or a pre-printed transfer form.
The social contribution is mandatory for all Ruhr University students. It comprises payments to Student Support Services/ Akademisches Förderungswerk - AKAFÖ (it maintains social institutions and university facilities such as the canteen, student halls of residence and cafeterias, to the university’s students representatives/ Allgemeiner Studierenden Ausschuss - AStA, and to the Deutsche Bahn for the semester ticket.

Semester Ticket
In North-Rhine-Westphalia you are allowed to use underground/subway, busses, trams, S-trains and the local trains Regionalexpress (RE) and Regionalbahn (RB) free of cost in the economy class. For all other trains of the federal train system (Deutsch-Bahn AG) the following restrictions apply: The semester ticket is generally not valid for the first class and does not enable journeys on intercity express trains (ICE) or other trains subject to a supplementary fare, such as IC and EC trains. For so-called D-trains special restrictions will need to be taken into consideration.
Via the semester ticket students can use RE/RB-trains on an unlimited basis within NRW.

Student Identification Card
With your enrolment you will receive your student ID-card (RUB-card). The RUB-card has the following functions: library card in the University Library (UB) and in the departmental libraries; can be loaded with Akafoe credit and used to pay in the cafeterias and Mensa and to access the washing machines in many residence halls; can be loaded with credit for printing at Campusdruck; can be used as key to access to some of the car parks on campus...

RUB eCampus
In eCampus you organise your studies online. Functions of eCampus are:

  • access and management of your RUB-mail-account,
  • print-out of documents as proof of enrolment, transcript of records, semester ticket
  • have access to RUB semester schedule, registering for courses and exams, creating schedules (CampusOffice)
  • administration of study achievements and exams, course of studies (CampusOffice)
  • administration of personal data, changing postal addresss
  • overview about your payments (tuition fee, ...)
