The study contents are organized in modules. All modules must be attended successfully and conclude with a final module grade (module examination).
The MA study programme ECUE is structured in a basic and methodological training in the first two semesters and allows a flexible and individualized in-depth training in the third semester (selectable in-depth modules 1 and 2). One in-depth module can optionally be replaced by a compulsory internship (practice module in the compulsory elective area).

All modules in the MA study programme ECUE are to be understood as curricular units that are basically only studied in their entirety.

In detail you study follwing modules (details: module handbook):

  • Introdcutory Module
  • Basic Module Philosophy and Law
  • Basic Module History
  • Basic Module Language and Culture
  • Basic Module Economy
  • Basic Module Politics and Society
  • Reseach Methods 1
  • In-depth Module1 1 and 2 or In-depth Module 1 and Practice Module
  • Reseach Methods 2

One module consists of two courses (lecture or seminar), exeptions are: module Research Methods 1 (three courses) and Research Methods 2 (tow courses + study trip). The structure of In-depth Modules depends on what is offered by the participating faculties/ sections.

Master's Thesis Registration
The prerequisites to register the MA thesis are that you have achieved at least 75 credit points (ECTS) of the total of 100 credit ponits (ECTS) from all modules, including at least three term papers and one oral examination. You must register in writing with the ECUE examination office (in person during office hours or by email). You will need the following documents:

Page Count and Time Period

The MA thesis consists of around 80 pages (200.000 characters) and deals with a interdisciplinary topic/ research question. Students have a period of four month (maximum six months for an empirical topic) to complete the MA thesis.

Planning

Start planning your MA thesis about six weeks before the registration of the thesis. After you have prepared a first outline (exposé) of your MA thesis (topic proposal, rough outline, literature selection), choose two supervisors for your thesis. During the planning phase, you are welcome to consult the MA ECUE archive of submitted MA thesis (List of MA thesis).

Supervisors

Supervisors can be professors, habilitated university lecturers, junior professors or Postdocs who regularly teach courses in the study programme leading to the final examination in the subjects to which the topic relates or who have taught these courses up to four semesters before admission to the examination. Your supervisor's tasks are to supervise the content of the thesis and to subsequently assess and evaluate it. Both supervisors independently determine a grade, which is then averaged as the overall grade.
After you have found the right supervisors, discuss the details of your thesis with the main supervisor. Only when the topic, outline and literature research have been completed is it advisable to register the thesis. The topic is formulated in writing by your main supervisor on the examination registration forms. This topic is then binding.

There is no deadline for registering the MA thesis. To finish the MA study programme ECUE within four semesters students have to register the MA thesis end of May/ beginning of June of the fourth semester (summer semester).

You can register your MA thesis at the ECUE examination office at any time.
