Application Requirements

Gender Studies - Culture, Communication, Society (Double-Major-Master)

At least a 6 semester completed B.A. degree in a social, cultural, or philosophical field. Magister and Diploma degrees are also recognized. Outside applicants from other subjects are subject to an equivalence test.

Joint Degree Gender Studies (Single Subject Master)

Completed B.A. degree in a comparative subject or Gender Studies with at least 180 CP. Degrees from other subjects such as the Humanities, Social Sciences, Theology, Law, and Psychology are also recognized as long as at least 30 CP are completed in the following subject areas:

  • Questions of Gender in social and cultural studies
  • Theory in Culture, Media, and Society
  • Methodology and empirical evidence in cultural and/or social sciences


Along with all other application documents, outside applicants from other subjects are subject to an equivalence test.

Application Process

The Gender Studies Master begins in the winter semester. Please pay close attention to the various application materials listed on this site. Since the summer semester of 2009, the Gender Studies Master has an online application process of the Ruhr-University Bochum. The application deadline is July 15 . By September 15 all necessary documents (B.A. transcript, diploma supplement, student attestation) must be handed in to the RUB’s registrar here.

Interested Students from outside the EU must have all application materials turned into the international office by July 15. Online-Office of Registrar. More information can be found on the International Office website

Both the double major master and the single major master have a restricted admittance policy: In the case of more applicants than spots available, a NC is applied. Therefore it is necessary for all applicants to complete all aspects of the admission requirements. For more general information please go to the website of theOffice of Registrar.

Equivalence Test

In the case of outside applicants and applicants from other subjects, an equivalence test takes place along side the necessary application documents. The recognition of equivalence can be combined with other requirements that must be completed by the end of the master program. Certificates of prerequisites must be turned in by the registration of degree completion.

Gender Studies - Culture, Communication and Society
Equivalence is based off the bachelor profile of degrees from the subjects Media Studies, History, Art History, Political Science, Philosophy, Sociology, or Social Psychology in Bochum. A complete description of the Bochum Bachelor can be found on each department’s webpage.

Joint Degree Gender Studies
Equivalence is based off the profile of the bachelor in Bochum and Graz and the completion of at least 30 CP in one or more of the previously named subjects.
